Icons are used to add a symbol next to each entry in the column of a table or matrix. This is done to assist the viewer with an indication of how to interpret the data.

Which icon is displayed in a given data cell can be defined in two different ways with the Icon Advanced Controls dialog box. We can create rules where the choice of icon is based on a set of specific rules. We can also use field values that contain icon names to directly specify the icon to display. The type of conditional formatting in use is determined by the “Format by” drop-down list in the upper- left corner of the Icon Advanced Controls dialog box.

Rules

With the Rules setting, we define specific conditions for each icon. If a value meets the conditions of the first rule in the list, it is assigned that icon. If not, the evaluation moves on to the next rule. Rules can be based on percentages or numbers. We can also define the position of the icon using the “Icon layout” and “Icon alignment” dropdown lists.

The Style dropdown list provides a way to quickly begin creating rules for a particular set of icons. When you select a style from the dropdown list, a set of sample rules are created. One rule is created for each of the icons in the selected style. We can then modify the conditions of the sample rules to create the exact set of rules desired.

Field Value

In some cases, the data itself may contain information on the icon to use when displaying a given value. This must be a valid name for a particular icon. A column or measure can be created within the data model that returns different icon names based on a set of conditions. Here are the possible icons and their names:
