Interview with Wendy Rinaldi at McGraw-Hill
In anticipation of the upcoming release of one of our newest books, Data Analysis with Microsoft Power BI, currently being written by our very own, Brian Larson, we decided to reach out to McGraw-Hill Editorial Director, and longtime friend of Brian, Wendy Rinaldi. This interview will give you a little insight into the basics of book editing, this current project, and why McGraw-Hill chooses to work with Brian and the SCS team!
In your opinion, how important is a book cover?
Book covers need to be compelling. These days, it’s important to design a cover that is impactful in a small space (for online shoppers) and makes what you’re conveying clear. It has to communicate the value proposition of your book in a succinct way.
Can you give us some basics of the editing process and how it works?
It’s an incremental process that ensures we get the highest quality output. A technical editor reviews each chapter for quality. Then the author revises each chapter based on the technical editor’s review and submits a final revision for each chapter. This is a chapter-by-chapter process.
Next, a professional copy editor ensures that everything is correct. Then our compositor lays out each chapter of the book and produces page proofs.
A professional proofreader and the book author review all the page proofs for accuracy. Then a professional indexer produces a high-quality index for the book.
This is a very hands-on process at all phases. Our goal is always to produce the highest quality product for the purchaser.
Why did McGraw-Hill choose to work with Brian and the SCS team on Brian’s new book?
We have a longstanding relationship with Brian and Superior Consulting Services. Brian has many bestsellers with his name on them – he published his first book with us 16 years ago! He has a way of conveying technical information to readers that really makes his books successful. He has a writing ability matched with his technical skills and a desire to empower people – it’s magic!
What is it like working with Brian?
It’s an absolute joy. It’s always a wonderful collaboration. I think he puts 150% effort into the books he publishes with us. He speaks with clarity and respect for his audience. He makes his audience feel like they can obtain the skills he has and he wants them to obtain those skills. I’m a superfan of Brian Larson and want him to keep being successful.
