# 5 Questions CFOs Should Ask Before Modernizing Their Data Environment

A data modernization project will affect reporting, forecasting, operational visibility and how much manual work happens behind the scenes. That gives CFOs a clear reason to be involved in the conversation.
But as a CFO, you don't need to determine the right data architecture or choose the technical solution. Other employees at your organization can provide key insights to help determine the right solution. But how do you get to that point?
These five questions can help you start that conversation with IT, finance, operations and other key players.
## 1. Where Are Our Biggest Reporting and Data Bottlenecks?
Start with where time and effort is being lost.
Maybe finance manually combines spreadsheets from multiple departments every month. Employees repeatedly export information from different systems. Leadership waits days for reports that require several people to collect and verify.
Look beyond how long it takes to produce the final report. Manual processes can also introduce inconsistent numbers, make reporting dependent on individual employees and leave less time for analysis.
Identifying those bottlenecks gives you a clearer picture of where modernization could have the greatest impact.

## 2. What's Stopping Us From Forecasting With Confidence?
Ask your team where uncertainty enters the forecasting process. Are departments working from different versions of the same number? Is key information arriving too late? Are important inputs incomplete or inconsistent?
These questions can help determine whether forecasting challenges actually originate further upstream.
Better forecasting doesn't necessarily require a new forecasting tool. Your organization may need more timely, consistent data feeding the tools and processes you already use.

## 3. What Technology Are We Already Using?
Modernization doesn't automatically mean replacing your current technology.
Your organization may already have an ERP, a CRM and other systems containing valuable business data. The bigger issue may be how those systems work together or whether you're using the capabilities you've already paid for.
Before adding another platform, work with your IT and data teams to understand what you own, how it's currently being used and where the gaps exist.

## 4. What Does Success Need to Look Like?
Define what should be different after the project is complete. Success might mean reducing the time required to produce monthly reports, giving leadership more timely information, improving forecasting confidence or creating consistent reporting across departments.
Those outcomes can guide technical decisions and give you meaningful ways to evaluate the investment later.
“We implemented a new platform” isn't a business outcome. “Finance no longer spends days combining departmental spreadsheets before month-end reporting” is.
## 5. Can We Realistically Handle This Internally?
Talk to your technical team about what it will take to reach those goals, considering both expertise and capacity.
Your team may understand the current environment better than anyone but lack experience with a particular technology or type of modernization project. Or they may have the skills but not the bandwidth alongside system maintenance, user support, security and other priorities.
If outside support is needed, look for a partner that works alongside your employees and prioritizes knowledge transfer. Your team should be prepared to maintain and evolve the environment after the engagement ends.
